Morning Train by Alfian Sa'at

Why do you not look at each other's
Faces? Is the scenery that arresting,
One housing estate giving birth
To yet another copy?
Or the advertisements, read and re-read,
As if behind a slogan's promise lay
Hidden promise? Answer me:
Is that consciousness rising in you,
Dissolving your fatigue like a plastic sheet
Warping in heat, or is that simply
Sleep, draining away from you
Down to your soles, to the invisible tracks
Where the dew is dying? Where electricity
Is what pushes you to the borders
Of your own loneliness, against
The vulgar loneliness of crowds

  1. The literary device used in the poem is "imagery",
The author alfian sa'at uses the literary device of "imagery" to convey the train's confusion to better understand the situation. From lines 1-2 at the train questions the passengers why the people do not look a each other's faces but instead look at the scenery which the train does not find spectacular. This shows that the train does not comprehend why people do not talk to each other and does not find the scenery very spectacular. The theme loneliness is explored further in the poem by "Where electricity Is what pushes you to the borders
    Of your own loneliness, against
The vulgar loneliness of crowds"to tell the readers that the protagonist has not woked up from reality and the consequences if no actions were taken.
